US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Saturday that his infrequent conversations with his Chinese counterpart in Indonesia were “constructive,” although he expressed concern regarding Taiwan.

“Despite the complexities of our relationship, I can say with some confidence that our delegations found today’s discussions useful, candid, and constructive,” Blinken said, following an unusually lengthy five hours of meetings with Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

However, Blinken also expressed concern regarding Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and Ukraine.

Blinken stated, “I conveyed deep concerns of the United States regarding Beijing’s increasingly provocative rhetoric and activity toward Taiwan and the vital importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

As per Blinken, he reminded Wang that “now is the time for all of us to speak up, as we have heard country after nation in the G20 do, to denounce the aggression and to demand, among other things, that Russia give access to food that is trapped in Ukraine.”

He said that there were “no signs” that Moscow was eager to engage following a torrent of criticism at the G20 conference the previous day.
