The largest nuclear power station in Europe, Zaporizhzhia, is now under Russian occupation. On Friday, Ukraine’s nuclear power operator announced that it had re-established its connection to surveillance systems there.

The U.N.’s nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has stated that it needs to urgently investigate the plant in southern Ukraine, but the Ukrainian government opposes any such visit as long as Russian soldiers are still in charge.

It had happened twice before that the six reactor plant’s lines of communication had been cut out.

On its Telegram channel, the Ukrainian government-run Energoatom agency announced that it has “restored the connection by its own efforts.”

The link had broken, it claimed “because all Ukrainian mobile operators—including Vodavone, with whom the IAEA has a data transmission contract—have been shut off by the invaders in Enerhodar. ” All “mandatory monitoring data are transmitted” and the IAEA had confirmed receipt, Energoatom said.

The lack of communication links, the IAEA stated earlier in the week, “only increases the urgency to dispatch this mission” to Zaporizhzhia.

It claimed that “a disruption of the facility’s communication systems” was to blame for the loss of the connection.

On February 24, Russian soldiers invaded Ukraine, and in early March, they took control of the factory when shelling nearby started a fire in one of its structures.

Last month, a Russian deputy prime minister stated that Moscow intended to link the station to the Russian electricity grid, but Ukrainian officials claimed that it would take years to do so.
