At 2:00 am on Friday, air raid sirens went out in Kyiv as a swarm of drones built in Iran were moving toward targets there and elsewhere.

The second day of Russian attacks on cities and infrastructure using 16 Shahed suicide drones, all of which, according to military officials, were shot down over Ukraine. Mayor of Kiev Vitali Klitschko claimed that seven missiles were fired at the city and that one government building was partially destroyed.

On the eve of the New Year’s celebrations, Russia launched hundreds of cruise missiles and drones toward Ukraine in an effort to cut off its water and energy supply.

Most of the areas affected by Thursday’s large airstrike, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, experienced power shortages.

The capital Kyiv, the southern cities of Odessa and Kherson, and the area around Lviv, which is close to Poland’s western border, were among the areas where losing power was “particularly painful,” according to Zelenskyy

Russia has received hundreds of Iranian-made Shahed-131 and 136 drones, infuriating the West, which is helping Ukraine fight off Moscow’s incursion. One justification given by Western officials for their reluctance to continue nuclear negotiations with Tehran is the Iranian government’s delivery of weaponry.

Jens Stoltenberg, the secretary general of NATO, urged members to give Ukraine more arms on Friday.

“I call on allies to do more. It is in all our security interests to make sure Ukraine prevails and (Russian President Vladimir) Putin does not win,” Stoltenberg told the German news agency DPA. The quickest path to peace, according to Stoltenberg, is through military assistance to Ukraine.
