Republican Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina has withdrawn from the U.S. presidential race, acknowledging that Donald Trump maintains a lead in the primary polls, making it unlikely for Scott to secure the Republican nomination.

In a Sunday night interview, Scott announced the suspension of his candidacy, providing an edge to other contenders seeking to challenge the frontrunner, Donald Trump.

Scott, the sole Black Republican in the Senate, made this decision six months after launching his White House bid, championing an optimistic vision for America’s future.

Utilizing his personal story of being raised by a single mother, he argued for the greatness of America and criticized Joe Biden and Democrats for undermining the opportunities that helped him succeed.

Scott adopted a more critical tone on the campaign trail in recent months despite initially focusing on a positive message. He controversially suggested that Black Americans could endure slavery better than the initiatives of President Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, aiming to combat poverty with programs like Medicare and Medicaid.

This remark drew criticism for downplaying the severity of slavery.

Additionally, Scott criticized Biden’s response to the Hamas attacks on October 7, accusing him of indirectly causing the violence. This led to backlash and scrutiny of Biden’s foreign policy approach.

Scott’s national primary poll numbers remained low, ultimately leaving him without a viable path to the Republican nomination despite expressing support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s “restraint” in response to Hamas attacks.
