Chinese technology company Alibaba has filed a law suit against the United States Department of Defense after being placed on a list of firms that they have links to the Chinese military. The law suit was filed in a federal court in San Jose, California. Alibaba argues that the decision is unfair and has no factual or legal basis.
The company said it is not connected to the Chinese military and does not take part in any military related strategy. Alibaba believes the designation could damage its business and reputation. A company spokesperson described the decision as arbitrary and said Alibaba is seeking to be removed from the list through legal action.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon added 80 companies and their subsidiaries to the blacklist. The list included several major Chinese firms, such as Alibaba, Baidu, and electric vehicle maker BYD. Under the new rules, the US Defense Department will not be allowed to sign new contracts with these companies or businesses under their control after June 30.
Alibaba also claims that the designation limits its ability to work with lobbying firms in the United States. According to the lawsuit, some firms that had represented Alibaba for years have already ended their relationship with the company because of the new restrictions. Alibaba argues that this affects its rights and ability to communicate with US policymakers.
The company noted that it is a publicly traded business with shareholders from around the world. It said major American investment firms, including JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Black-Rock, hold shares in the company. Alibaba stressed that it operates mainly as an e-commerce and cloud computing provider. The dispute comes at a time of rising tensions between the United States and China. In response to the blacklist, China recently imposed export controls on 10 American companies involved in defense and rare earth mining.
The disagreement could create new challenges for relations between the two countries, despite recent efforts by US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping to improve ties.
