At least 10 people were killed and 16 others injured after armed attackers opened fire at Bondi Beach, one of Sydney’s most popular tourist destinations, according to foreign media reports. Among the injured are two children, officials confirmed.
The incident occurred while more than 2,000 people had gathered at the beach to celebrate a Jewish religious festival, triggering widespread panic as gunfire erupted in the crowded area.
Emergency services rushed to the scene as police cordoned off the beach and surrounding areas. Witnesses reported scenes of chaos, with people fleeing for safety amid the sound of gunshots.
According to a news agency, police engaged the attackers in a retaliatory operation. One attacker was killed, while another was arrested in an injured condition. During the exchange of fire, two police officers were also injured, authorities said.
The Prime Minister of Australia strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “senseless act of violence” and expressing condolences to the victims and their families. The Prime Minister also praised the swift response of emergency services and law enforcement.
Investigations into the motive behind the attack are ongoing, and security has been heightened across Sydney as authorities assess any further threats.
