FIFA World Cup: Colombia beat Ghana 1-0 to set up Switzerland showdown

Colombia will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.

Jhon Arias scored the only goal as Colombia defeated Ghana 1-0 in hot conditions in Kansas City on Friday to reach the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, continuing an impressive run that has made them strong underdogs in the tournament.

Arias scored in the 14th minute, finishing a cross from substitute Luis Suarez, while Colombia’s solid defense held firm as Nestor Lorenzo’s team extended their unbeaten run and set up a match against Switzerland in the next round.

Colombia have largely gone unnoticed in the tournament despite being unbeaten against Portugal, Uzbekistan and DR Congo to finish top of Group K.

Their key moment on Friday came from two players not expected to combine, as Suarez, who came on after Jhon Cordoba was forced off with a groin injury in the eighth minute, delivered a perfect cross to the back post, where Arias was left unmarked.

With space and time, Arias calmly placed the ball into the bottom corner to give Colombia the lead.

The stadium felt more like Barranquilla than Kansas City, as thousands of Colombia fans turned the match against Ghana into a home-game atmosphere, strongly supporting their team in a way rarely seen so far from home.

The stands were filled with fans wearing yellow shirts, waving scarves and wearing sombrero vueltiao hats, using them to cool themselves in the 30 C (86 F) heat.

They jumped, sang and chanted “Vamos Colombia! Esta noche tenemos que ganar!” (Let’s go Colombia, tonight we must win!) throughout the match.

There was little cause for concern, as Colombia were clearly the better team.

Luis Diaz had several chances to score. He hit the side netting in the first half and later thought he had scored again early in the second half after finishing Arias’s cross, but it was ruled offside.

Colombia continued pushing for a second goal, and Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi made several excellent saves late in the match as Colombian fans celebrated every touch.

Antoine Semenyo was Ghana’s main attacking threat, but Colombia’s strong defense kept him from getting a clear chance.

Los Cafeteros became the fourth South American team to reach the last 16, joining Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina.

Colombia will face Switzerland on Tuesday in Vancouver.

The match also made history, as both teams were forced to make substitutions before the 15th minute due to injuries. Ghana right back Marvin Senaya went off in the 13th minute with a hamstring injury.
