The date of July 16 is important and memorable for Pakistan because on this very day, as a result of the day and night work of the scientists of our beloved country, Pakistan had conducted a successful experiment of Badr-1.
It was 1990 when our dream of acquiring space technology came true and Pakistan launched the first satellite “Badr 1” into space.
Badr 1 was designed by Pakistani experts. It was the work of 30 scientists from the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SPARCO) and took a year to prepare.
The satellite consisted of various systems that cost about Rs. 25 million at the time. The shape of Badr-1 was circular. It had 26 sides. The solar-powered planet was equipped with state-of-the-art electronic systems capable of receiving, storing and transmitting information from the Earth’s centre.
The sattelite was launched into orbit between the Philippines and Taiwan in the Pacific Ocean at 5:50 a.m. Pakistan Standard Time, completing its orbit around the Earth every 98 minutes.
