Punjab’s Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence draw over 71,000 applications

Maryam Nawaz described the project as a major step forward for education in Punjab.

LAHORE: More than 71,000 students have applied for admission to Punjab’s Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said by calling the strong response towards the sign of growing public trust in government schools.

Maryam Nawaz chaired a meeting in Lahore to review the progress of the education project. The chief minister directed authorities to make 114 schools operational by Aug. 14. She also set a target to complete 300 schools across Punjab by September.

Officials said the schools are being developed to meet international education standards. Each classroom will have no more than 30 students. The schools will also have qualified teachers and modern learning facilities.

Students from families earning up to Rs200,000 a month will receive free tuition. Ten percent of seats will be reserved for students whose families can pay the full fee.

Maryam Nawaz described the project as a major step forward for education in Punjab. She said the high number of applications showed that people are once again placing their trust in public schools.

She added that the government plans to establish Nawaz Sharif Schools of Eminence in every division, district and tehsil across the province.

The chief minister also praised Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat and his team for their work on the project. She thanked them for helping move the initiative forward.
