Officials say an Ohio mother and her kid died in West Virginia when the woman purposefully drove her car into a river, killing a young volunteer fireman who tried to save them. According to state Fire Marshal investigators, LaTonya Bell careened her vehicle into the Elk River in Sutton, West Virginia, at approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, when she and her 8-year-old daughter Havana Pipkins were inside.
Volunteer firefighter John D. Forbush, 24, of Gassaway, heard about the incident over the department radio stream and went to the location, which was about a mile from where he was at the time, according to marshals. Officials claimed he came and reported seeing what seemed to be individuals trapped inside “he promptly dived into the river to rescue the victims.”
None of the three were able to be rescued. About two hours later, Forbush’s body was retrieved from the river. The bodies of the victims were transferred to a local medical examiner’s office. Bell “deliberately drove her vehicle into the Elk River,” according to authorities. The case has been classified as a murder-suicide by authorities.
Fire marshals said Forbush, a 4-year volunteer fireman, “selflessly dedicated his life for those in need.” “His contributions to the community will be remembered forever.”
According to a GoFundMe page set up in his honor, he and his significant other have a 1-year-old daughter.
