Authorities in the Nigerian state of Zamfara have offered cattle to surrendering rebels.

According to a foreign news agency, the robbers in the Nigerian state of Zamfara have been offered cattle by the government in exchange for a gun, under which two cows can be obtained for an AK-47 (Kalashnikov).

Zamfara Governor Bello Matawalle said, any mercenary who submitted a gun to the government would be compensated in the form of two live cows.

The Zamfarah area has been the target of kidnappers, armed militants, passers-by and cattle thieves.

According to Matawalle, the offer is aimed at persuading gangsters known as “dacoits” to surrender.

Authorities have so far held peace talks with the military to end the killings, but to no avail.

Currently, there is no indication as to whether these strategists, who are mostly Fulani herdsmen, are active in running cattle and kidnapping for ransom, respond to the government’s offer.’

It may be recalled that in a recent attack, dacoits killed 21 people.

It should be noted that 8,000 people have been killed and 200,000 displaced since 2011 in northwestern Nigeria following the rising crime of looting and kidnapping for ransom.
