Moon to appear directly above Kaaba
The city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia will witness an astronomical phenomenon...
The celestial event of ‘Long Moon Night’ or commonly called ‘Cold Moon’ is all set to happen today and tomorrow.
After the occurrence of the event ‘Great Conjunction’ or the pairing of Jupiter and Saturn. Another celestial occurrence of the year 2020 is expected to begin by today.
For the excited skywatchers, this will be the last astronomical event of the year 2020. It will also be the year’s last full moon, also known as the Cold Moon.
The 13th and the final lunar event will feature the highest full moon of the Gregorian year. Surprisingly, the sky-watchers will be able to witness it on two separate days.
As per the prediction of the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the appearance of the full moon on the highest peak is supposed to take place on 29 and 30 December at 7:54 pm (IST) and 8:57 pm (IST) respectively.
Almanac further added that people will be able to spot December’s full moon just before sunset.
The Distinctive Features Of the ‘Long Moon Night’
This time the moon will be observable for a longer period of time due to its high trajectory across the sky.
As the occurrence happens on one of the longest nights of the year, it is often called the ‘Long Night Moon’. That’s because the date is relatively similar to the solstice of winter. The full moon is also named the ‘Moon After Yule’ in Europe as it takes place only after Christmas.
The name of the Cold Moon refers to “frigid conditions of this time of year”. The term has originated from the several rituals followed by native Americans, according to the Old Farmer’s Almanac.
