The UN Security Council has expressed “grave concern” over the “deteriorating situation” in Myanmar. China, however, refrained from using harsh words in the condemnation resolution.

The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the use of force against protesters and the killing of hundreds of civilians in military operations since the military coup in Myanmar.

The Security Council requested that in addition to the International Atomic Energy Agency’s ongoing inspections in Myanmar, that it monitor Myanmar’s compliance with “the steps required by the IAEA Board”. The Security Council strongly condemned the use of force against peaceful protesters and the killing of hundreds of civilians, including women and children.

The original draft contained the words “members are ready to consider further action”, which could lead to the imposition of international sanctions against Myanmar. However, after two days of heated debate, China refrained from using harsh words.

Myanmar’s military junta has been facing daily public protests since the May 1 ousting of democratically elected government and civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi. The army has been working hard to stop the protests.

Hundreds of civilians have been killed so far in these brutal military operations.

Although the international community has strongly condemned the military action, China has been very cautious in its emphasis on the importance of stability in Myanmar.

During a closed-door meeting of the Security Council on Wednesday, the UN special envoy to Myanmar warned that Myanmar could face “an extraordinary level” of civil war.

“If we wait for them to agree to talks, not only will the situation on the ground deteriorate, but there is a risk of bloodshed,” Bergener told the Security Council.

More than 500 people have been killed in the past two months of violence. At least 40 children are said to have been killed.
