Switzerland announces that children between 12 to 15 years old could be vaccinated with the shot from Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech.
The recommendation was given earlier this month by the Swissmedic, drug regulator in Switzerland. It is mainly aimed at the youth in groups
It is primarily directed at youth in groups who are at high risk of severe disease if infected with COVID-19, such as those suffering from a chronic ailment or those who have contact with someone in a risk group.
The country, which has been vaccinating people of age 16 and above with the Pfizer/BioNTech shot, added the younger age group with the aim to protect the younger people from rare infectious disease and reducing the source of virus transmission.
According to Swissmedic, the vaccination must be administered in two doses to people above the age of 16, despite clinical trials demonstrating near-complete efficacy in the younger age range.
About the vaccine
Ingredients
The ingredients are mRNA, lipids ((4-hydroxybutyl)azanediyl)bis(hexane-6,1-diyl)bis(2-hexyldecanoate), 2 [(polyethylene glycol)-2000]-N,N-ditetradecylacetamide, 1,2-Distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine, and cholesterol), potassium chloride, monobasic potassium phosphate, sodium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate dihydrate, and sucrose.
How does an mRNA vaccine work?
mRNA, which is given to your cells by lipid nanoparticles, instructs the cells to produce the spike protein found on the surface of the new coronavirus that causes infection. Instructing cells to produce the spike protein triggers an immunological response, which includes the production of antibodies specific to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein.mRNA vaccines do not contain any virus particles, meaning that they don’t contain weakened or dead parts of a virus or bacterium.2
Do mRNA vaccines change a person’s DNA?
mRNA is a transient carrier of information that does not integrate into human DNA. mRNA does not enter a cell’s nucleus, which is where our DNA is kept.
