KARACHI: The country’s overall electric power generation during FY21 surged 6.9 per cent to 130,223GWh (14,866MW), compared with 121,867GWh (13,912MW) during FY20, official data suggests.

Hydel remained the major contributor in the overall generation with 30 per cent share; followed re-gasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG), 21 per cent; coal-based generation, 21 per cent; gas-based generation, 11 per cent; while the nuclear power remained 8 per cent and furnace oil (FO) share remained 5 per cent during the outgoing fiscal year. The gas-based power generation was down 4.8 per cent.

The fuel cost for electric power generation increased 1.3 per cent to an average of Rs4.83/KWh in FY21, mainly due to the rise in the furnace oil, coal and gas-based cost of generation.

The power generation went up 8.1 per cent to 14,361GWh (19,946MW) during June 2021, compared with 13,288GWh (18,455MW) during June 2020. “The rise in generation has been witnessed due to [the] higher generation on nuclear, furnace oil and coal,” Rao Aamir Ali at Arif Habib Limited said.

During June 2021, nuclear, furnace oil and coal-based power generation increased 84 per cent, 82 per cent and 20 per cent, respectively. However, hydel-based generation was down 12 per cent in June.

The fuel cost for generation increased 31 per cent to Rs5.65/KWh in June 2021, mainly due to the rise in gas, coal, furnace oil and RLNG-based cost of generation along with a decline in the hydel-based generation.

In June, the nuclear-based generation increased 84 per cent to reach an all-time high of 1,618GWh, compared with 880GWh during June 2020.

“The rise in the nuclear-based power generation has been witnessed, mainly due to [the] induction of Karachi Nuclear Power Plant (Kanupp) in the system. The Kanupp generated 741GWh during June, which is 46 per cent of the total nuclear-based generation and 5 per cent of the overall generation,” Ali added.
