Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to justify the ban on TikTok.

The case hearing was led by Chief Justice IHC Justice Akhtar Minaallah. At the hearing, he asked PTA counsel that why TikTok has been banned? If banning it is the only way then Google should also be banned as it also provides the same content as TikTok does.

The PTA counsel replied: The direction to ban the app came from the Sindh High Court and Peshawar High Court and develop a system to book inappropriate content on the platform.

upon hearing the reply, Chief Justice IHC asked the lawyer to read the verdicts of both SHC and PHC and asked where both courts have mentioned banning the app.

“Both the high courts have asked to develop a mechanism to stop inappropriate content,” he remarked and added that both the decisions were wrongly implemented.

Justice Minhallah also said that such videos are also available on YouTube. Why PTA has not blocked it?

A notice to the Secretary IT was issued from IHC and asked PTA to convince the court of a complete ban on TikTok.

The next hearing will be on August 23.
