LONDON: British Conservative MP David Amess has died after being stabbed at an event in his local constituency in southeast England, British media reported on Friday.
Police did not name Amess but said: “A man has been arrested on [the] suspicion of murder after a man was stabbed in Leigh-on-Sea” and that the victim “later died”, AFP reported.
Earlier, Xinhua quoted British media, as saying, Britain’s ruling Conservative Party’s member of the parliament (MP) David Amess was stabbed multiple times at a constituency meeting in Essex, a county in southeastern England.
Amess, 69, an MP since 1983 in South and West Essex, was stabbed by a man who walked into his constituency meeting. He was given early treatment at the crime scene and later shifted to a hospital through an air ambulance.
Exxes police said: “A man has been arrested following an incident in Leigh on Sea, a town in Essex. We were called to reports of a stabbing in Eastwood Road North shortly after 12:05pm. A man was arrested shortly after the incident and we are not looking for anyone else.”
