The fact-checking section of the Associated Press has looked at various films that claim to show the devastation of the Moskva. They are, in fact, not.
Videos that some say show missiles impacting the Russian ships are really video from a Norwegian Navy test missile strike from 2013.
The Moskva was destroyed by a fire and severe weather, according to Ukraine, while Russia claims it was attacked by anti-ship missiles. As a result, people on social media uploaded photographs and videos taken out of context, claiming they showed the aftermath of an assault.
When seen in one widely circulated video, an enormous cruiser went up in flames as it went off in a cloud of dense, black smoke.
As of Thursday, it has been uploaded by one Twitter user as “a video showing the explosion of a Russian cruiser after it was struck by a Ukrainian missile.”
A Naval Strike Missile was tested on a decommissioned Norwegian ship during a military exercise nine years ago, according to reports from military.com, the British news agency South West News Service and others, which all utilised the same video.
Many cities in eastern and central Ukraine have heard air raid sirens recently, including Dnipropetrovsk, Kryvyi Rih, Zaporizhzhia and Cherkassy, Donetsk and Odesa, Kharkiv, Poltava and Mykolaiv.
