LAHORE: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) sentenced six convicts to death as it awarded punishment to 89 individuals for killing a Sri Lankan factory manager in Sialkot last year.

ATC Judge Natasha Naseem conducted the trial and 46 witnesses gave their testimonies while the footage of 10 on-site closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras and videos recorded by the mob were also produced as evidence.

According to the reports, ATC sentenced seven convicts to life along with Rs0.1 million fine each and awarded a two-year jail term to 76.

The prosecutor said the court awarded punishment to 89 individuals in the case. He said 46 witnesses were made part of the challan (charge-sheet) and added two charge sheets were submitted against the convicts.

He said the first challan nominated 80 people while nine minors were nominated in the other.

The prosecutor said the trial of minor suspects was carried out separately and they could not be sentenced to death according to the law.

Priyantha Kumara, a factory manager, was assaulted to death, and later his body was torched by a mob over false charges of blasphemy on December 3, 2021, in the city of Sialkot.

In January this year, Pakistan disbursed aid of $0.1 million along with the first salary to the widow of the slain Sri Lankan national as compensation for the loss and committed salary for the next 10 years.
