According to her husband, the Texas grandmother whose grandson, Salvador Ramos, shot her in the face and then went on to kill 21 people at a Uvalde primary school earlier this week is recuperating in a hospital but is still unable to talk following surgery on Wednesday.

Ramos’ grandpa, Rolando Reyes, claimed Thursday that the suspect’s 66-year-old grandma was awake following surgery the day before but couldn’t speak.

Reyes talked briefly outside his Uvalde, Texas, house, where Ramos was also a resident. Ramos, 18, is accused of shooting and killing 19 kids and two teachers at adjacent Robb Elementary School on Tuesday before being critically wounded by police.

Prior to the school shooting, Ramos reportedly shot his grandmother in the face and posted on Facebook, “I’m going to shoot my grandma.” “I shot my grandma,” he said, before adding, “and now I’m going to shoot an elementary school.”

The incident on Tuesday also injured at least 17 other persons, including many law enforcement personnel.

According to the University Health hospital in San Antonio, a 66-year-old woman thought to be Ramos’ grandmother, is still in critical condition. Three additional children are still in the hospital: a 10-year-old girl in critical condition and two other girls, aged 9 and 10, in excellent health.

Reyes also stated on Thursday that his daughter, Adriana Reyes, is “feeling awful for everyone,” but added, “She, too, lost her son.”

Maria Alvarez, Adriana Reyes’ boyfriend’s mother, claimed she met Adriana on Tuesday night when the lady seemed to be in shock after the day’s events.
