Biden previously insisted that approval be accompanied with financing for unrelated government anti-Covid efforts. However, because Republicans are dragging their feet on Covid-related spending, Biden stated that he is willing to abandon the Covid funding requests for the time being in order to get the Ukraine money through.
“We cannot afford to postpone this critical military effort,” he said in a statement, pushing Congress to send the Ukraine funding bill “to my desk as soon as possible.”
The modernization of the famous Lend-Lease programme came only hours after Putin presided over a military parade on Red Square in Moscow to commemorate the Soviet triumph over Nazi Germany.
Putin has used the tragedy to legitimise his assault on pro-Western Ukraine, which he erroneously alleges is occupied by Nazis.
In the 1940s, the US and the communist Soviet Union were short partners against their mutual adversary, Germany. President Franklin D. Roosevelt used the Lend-Lease programme for the first time, reducing bureaucratic barriers to channel billions of dollars of equipment to European partners, including the Soviets.
Lend-lease is now being utilised to open the floodgates for artillery, anti-aircraft missiles, anti-tank weaponry, and other potent Western armaments deployed by Ukraine’s military against Russian soldiers.
Biden stressed the significance of the date, saying that he was signing the measure the day after the United States and Western Europe had separate Victory in Europe days on May 8th.
He also emphasised that Monday was the occasion of May 9 Europe Day, which commemorates the formation of the European Union in 1950 and the establishment of a “economic powerhouse” and “global force for peace.”
Recognizing the billions of dollars already spent by the US, Biden stated that “caving to aggression is much more costly.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hailed the bill in a tweet, alluding to the fight against Germany.”The signing of the Lend-lease statute today is a watershed moment. I am confident that we will triumph once more. And we will fight for democracy in Ukraine. In addition, in Europe. As it was 77 years ago, “Zelensky wrote.
