Qatar is hosting the 2022 FIFA World Cup, therefore it’s time to review football terminology and rules. This popular sport has rules and regulations, like every other. One of football’s 17 regulations involves kicks. We’ll get puzzled by all the kicks in football/soccer. This article compares free kicks and penalty kicks.

What Are Free Kicks?

Free kicks restart play in football. After an opponent’s rule infraction, it’s given.

Direct and indirect free kicks exist.

Indirect free kicks restart play after a foul. After “non-penal” fouls or when the game is stopped to caution or dismiss an opponent, these are delivered to the other team.
Not scoring may result. After an indirect free kick, the ball must touch another player before scoring.

What Are Kick penalties?

After a foul, a penalty kick restarts the game. In a penalty kick, a player has one shot and is only defended by the opposing goalie.

Penalty kicks are awarded when a player commits a direct free kick-worthy offence inside their own penalty area. The penalty mark is 11 metres from the goal and in the centre of the touchlines.

Penalty kicks are direct free kicks.

Referees award penalty kicks for direct kick fouls inside the opposing team’s penalty area. When an opponent fouls inside the penalty box, the penalty kick is taken from inside.

When an opponent fouls inside the box, a free kick is awarded. During penalties, only the goaltender and penalty taker are present. The location of the offence determines whether it requires a straight free kick or a penalty kick, not its severity.
