The Emirates ID is a vital document for all UAE residents, both citizens and expatriates. Depending on the type of residence visa, the ID is valid for one, two, five, or even ten years.

It is essential for accessing almost all major services in the UAE, such as opening a bank account, renting property, and getting a phone connection.

Additionally, it is crucial for travelling to select destinations that offer visa-on-arrival facilities for Emirates ID holders. Therefore, maintaining a valid Emirates ID is important.

An expired Emirates ID can lead to disruptions in services like bank accounts and phone numbers and may incur fines if not renewed within the grace period.

Various fines can be incurred for issues related to the Emirates ID, such as breaking traffic rules, providing incorrect information, late renewal, unauthorized copying, misuse of documents, or using another person’s Emirates ID without permission.

These fines range from AED 200 to AED 2,000, depending on the violation.

What are the exemptions?

Certain circumstances may exempt individuals from paying fines:

  • If the ID card expired after leaving the UAE and spending more than three months outside the country.
