10th death anniversary

LAHORE: The nation today commemorates the 10th death anniversary of Squadron Leader Maryam Mukhtiar, Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot, who laid down her life in the line of duty.

Born on May 18, 1992, in Karachi, Maryam completed her intermediate education at Army Public School & College, Malir Cantt. She was also an accomplished football player, representing Balochistan United in the National Women Football Championship.

In 2014, Maryam joined the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) as a graduate officer and became part of the 132nd GD Pilot Course, which included six other women. She earned distinction as one of the PAF’s fighter pilots.

On November 24, 2015, during a routine training flight near Mianwali, a technical fault occurred in her aircraft. Demonstrating exceptional courage, she diverted the plane toward an uninhabited area to prevent civilian casualties. Tragically, she lost her life, becoming the first female fighter pilot in Pakistan to be martyred on duty.
