United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday that whenever he has visited Pakistan he has seen “remarkable resilience and commitment to the Afghan brothers, even when international support was minimal.”

Antonio Guterres today addressed a conference — jointly organized by the Pakistan government and UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

It was titled 40 years of Afghan Refugees Presence in Pakistan: A New Partnership for Solidarity in Islamabad.

“We have come together to recognize a remarkable story of solidarity and compassion. It is important to do so because it is a story that spans over decades,” he said.

Foreign Minister of Pakistan Shah Mahmood Qureshi said The retreat and repatriation of Afghan refugees requires global efforts.

He was addressing International Conference on 40 Years of Hosting Afghan Refugees in Pakistan, in Islamabad.

Shah Mahmood said This year, many Afghan refugees also have high hopes for the conference.

The relations of Pakistan and Afghanistan shares a common religion, culture and authority.

Moreover, Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees addressed the conference.

He said For the last 40 years, as we have heard, the people of Pakistan have stood with their Afghan brothers.

Through the early days of upheaval and displacement, when a third of the country’s population fled across its borders in just a few years.

Through moments of hope, when millions returned, seeking stability and a future back home.
