ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif requested high-level participation from Bahrain in the ‘International Conference on Climate Resilient Pakistan’.

The donor conference is being held in Geneva on 9 January next year and is being co-hosted by the Government of Pakistan and the United Nations.

The prime minister had a telephonic conversation with King of the Kingdom of Bahrain Hamad Bin Isa Al Khalifa during which he apprised him of the conference and requested participation from Bahrain.

The King of Bahrain expressed firm support for the initiatives to strengthen Pakistan’s response during its reconstruction and rehabilitation phase, after the climate-induced floods in the country.

During a conversation, the prime minister underscored the importance Pakistan attached to its cordial and historical relationship with the Kingdom of Bahrain.

Both the leaders expressed satisfaction at close cooperation between the two countries at the multilateral forums.

The King reciprocated the sentiments of the prime minister and reassured the desire of the Bahraini leadership to further deepen and broaden bilateral relations with Pakistan. The two leaders agreed to maintain close contact and work together on all issues of mutual interest.

Earlier Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to participate in the donor conference in Geneva.

The prime minister spoke on telephone with the Emir of Qatar and thanked him for the generous humanitarian assistance provided by Qatar in the wake of the devastating climate-induced floods in Pakistan earlier this year.

He recalled that Pakistan now faced the enormous challenge of rehabilitation and reconstruction in a climate-resilient manner.

The prime minister highlighted continued international support and solidarity was required to meet the daunting challenge of recovery, rehabilitation and reconstruction of the affected areas, and building resilience against future climate shocks.

The prime minister congratulated the Emir on Qatar’s successful hosting of FIFA-2022 Football World Cup, which had set a new benchmark for international sports events. Both also had a brief exchange of views on bilateral and international issues of mutual interest.
