KARACHI: Pakistan is facing a worsening flour crisis with the commodity being sold at high prices and the country reportedly facing a shortage of wheat.
The price of wheat and flour has skyrocketed amid the ongoing crisis in Pakistan. Citizens are compelled to stand in long queues daily to receive subsidized flour where there are also reports of stampedes in several parts of the country.
Flour in Karachi is being sold from Rs140 per kilogram to Rs160 per kilogram. The Sindh government had fixed the price of flour at Rs65 per kg.
In Islamabad, a 10-kg bag of flour is being sold at Rs1500, while a 20-kg bag is being sold at Rs2800. Mills owners in Punjab have increased the price of flour to Rs160 per kg.
In Lahore, flour is being sold at Rs130 per kg which was earlier being sold at Rs125 per kg in the province. A 20 kg bag of flour is being sold at Rs2500, while the price of 50 kg bag has increased to Rs6,500. A large bag of 100-kh is being sold for Rs12,000.
In Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Multan, the price of a 20-kg flour bag has increased from Rs980 to Rs1295, while the average prices is around Rs1621 per kg.
Khyber Pakthunkhwa is facing the worst ever crisis, while the wheat stocks in Balochistan have depleted. In Peshawar, a 20-kg bag is being sold for as high as Rs3100 after the government was unable to control prices.
