LHC disposes of plea against ban on broadcast of Imran Khan’s speeches

• LHC disposed of plea against ban on Imran Khan
• The court sustained the objection by registrar
• It said certified copy of PEMRA notice was not attached

LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) disposed of the plea against the ban on speeches of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan sustaining the objection by the Registrar.

The application was submitted to the LHC on Monday and PTI’s lawyer Ahmed Pansuta filed the plea on behalf of PTI chief.

The hearing on the plea took place today and the court disposed it off citing the objection that the certified notice by PEMRA was not attached to the application.

Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan disposed of the plea.

Pertinently, PTI challenged the ban in LHC and PEMRA was made a party.

The petition maintained that the ban on speech is a violation of the fundamental rights in the Constitution. “The Constitution of Pakistan allows citizens to freedom of expression,” it added.

PTI took the position in the petition that the ban on freedom of expression will lead to chaos and political agitation in the country.

Earlier, PEMRA banned the broadcast of the speeches, talks, and statements of Imran Khan on all TV channels with immediate effect as he is constantly criticising the state institutions.

In a statement issued by the media watchdog on Sunday, Imran Khan’s live and recorded speeches, statements and talks have been banned under Section 27 of the PEMRA Ordinance.
