 LAHORE/KARACHI: Nomination papers of PML-N’s Maryam Nawaz and Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Rana Aftab for the post of Punjab chief minister whereas of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s Syed Murad Ali Shah and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P)’s Ali Khurshidi have for the Sindh chief minister’s post have been declared valid after scrutiny.

In Punjab, the newly-elected Speaker of the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmed Khan, set Sunday noon as the deadline for the submission of nomination papers for the position. Malik Ahmed Khan personally verified the nomination papers and announced that the election for this esteemed position would take place during the assembly session scheduled for the following day.

Maryam Nawaz, a prominent figure within the PML-N and the political successor of party leader Nawaz Sharif, was selected as the party’s nominee for the highly sought-after role of chief minister of Punjab, the most populous province in the country. Meanwhile, PTI made a last-minute decision to nominate Rana Aftab Ahmed Khan for the post, following an attempted arrest of their earlier nominee, Mian Aslam Iqbal, by provincial police.

Hammad Azhar, a leader of PTI, explained that although party founder Imran Khan initially nominated Mian Aslam Iqbal, heavy police presence outside the Punjab Assembly prevented his candidacy. Consequently, the party leadership consulted and decided to nominate Rana Aftab instead.

After the verification of his nomination papers, Rana Aftab, the candidate for the Punjab chief minister position from the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), met with Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan. Speaking to journalists, Rana Aftab criticized the exclusion of SIC members from the assemblies and emphasized that the safety of their workers was of greater importance than political positions. He expressed confidence in winning the CM’s seat in Monday’s election and urged the relevant authorities to allow the elected MPAs of SIC to participate in the assembly for the election of the House leader.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) nominated Murad Ali Shah for the third time, while the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) finalized Ali Khurshidi as its candidate for the post of Sindh chief minister. Khurshidi, who secured victory in Karachi’s PS-119 constituency with 22,424 votes, previously served as a member of the provincial legislature from 2018 to 2023. He will be competing against Murad Ali Shah, the PPP’s chief ministerial candidate, who is favored to serve as the province’s chief executive for the third time.
