The MQM-Pakistan (MQM-P) has called for empowered local government system in Sindh as a condition for joining the coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

A delegation from MQM-P, led by Convener Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, held discussions with PML-N leaders at Ishaq Dar’s residence regarding government formation.

The MQM-P spokesperson later confirmed that the party sought PML-N’s backing for three proposed constitutional amendments aimed at enhancing the authority of local governments to participate in the coalition government.

Sources cited MQM-P leaders emphasizing the importance of constitutional safeguards for decentralization of powers and resources to the grassroots level.

Both parties agreed to continue negotiations for government formation at the federal level.

The MQM-P delegation included Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori, Syed Mustafa Kamal, and Dr. Farooq Sattar. Earlier, MQM-P Senior Deputy Convener Syed Mustafa Kamal announced plans to introduce the constitutional amendments during the first parliamentary session.

He stressed the need for constructive dialogue among political parties, including the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), to facilitate the passage of these amendments.

Kamal cautioned against the potential negative consequences of parties leveling accusations against each other, emphasizing the importance of unity and cooperation in national affairs.
