ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar emphasized on Friday that the PECA Act is a necessary measure to counter threats posed by social media. He assured that its implementation would not create problems for media and newspapers, while urging journalistic organizations to extend their support.

Speaking to the media, Tarar highlighted that the Act aims to combat fake propaganda, harassment, false news, and child abuse on social media, which pose risks to national integrity. The law has been signed by the president following parliamentary approval, with rules still under development, allowing room for consultation with all stakeholders.

He announced the formation of a Social Media Protection Authority, comprising representatives from the private sector, journalists, and IT professionals. A dedicated tribunal will also be established to oversee disputes, with an appeal process leading up to the Supreme Court.

Tarar reiterated that regulating social media is essential to prevent misinformation, intimidation, and incitement to violence. He noted that Pakistan’s approach aligns with global practices and questioned why any objections were being raised when no specific clauses had been criticized.

The minister emphasized that the law is crucial in tackling disinformation, ensuring peace, and safeguarding citizens from social media misuse. He welcomed further discussions on the Act and encouraged active participation in the rule-making process.
