Pakistan braces for torrential rains, floods, and landslides till September 2
ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has warned that heavy rains from August 29 to September 2 could trigger floods and landslides in different parts of Pakistan, while Karachi faces the risk of urban flooding.
The Meteorological Department forecast heavy downpours in northern and northeastern Punjab on August 30 and 31, including Rawalpindi, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Gujrat, and Mandi Bahauddin, where low-lying areas may go underwater. Central and southern Punjab, including Multan, D.G. Khan, Rajanpur, Bahawalpur, and Rahim Yar Khan, also face flood threats during the same period.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, districts in Malakand and Hazara divisions, such as Chitral, Swat, Dir, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Nowshera, and D.I. Khan, could see landslides due to heavy rain.
The NDMA also warned of possible landslides in Azad Kashmir, particularly in Muzaffarabad, Bagh, Kotli, and Mirpur, while in Gilgit-Baltistan, areas like Gilgit, Skardu, Hunza, and Astore may experience both landslides and glacial lake outburst floods (GLOF).
In Sindh, coastal areas including Karachi, Thatta, and Badin may face heavy rains and urban flooding between August 30 and September 2. Interior Sindh cities like Hyderabad, Sukkur, Dadu, and Larkana are also likely to receive torrential rains until September 1.
In Balochistan, districts such as Gwadar, Panjgur, Khuzdar, and Lasbela may experience flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying areas during the same period.
The NDMA urged citizens to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and contact local authorities or rescue teams in case of emergencies. It also advised tourists to delay trips to northern areas due to the risk of heavy rains and landslides.
