A 5.8-magnitude earthquake struck parts of Pakistan, sending tremors across Islamabad, Rawalpindi and several northern regions, officials confirmed.
According to the National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) of the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake was recorded at a depth of 159 kilometres, with its epicentre located in northern Tajikistan.
Tremors were felt in multiple areas, including Swat, Malakand, Abbottabad, Mansehra, Haripur, Muzaffarabad, the Neelum Valley and the Leepa Valley. Residents in several cities reported strong shaking, prompting many to rush out of their homes while reciting prayers.
Despite the widespread tremors, no immediate reports of casualties or damage were received, authorities said. Emergency services remain on alert as officials continue to monitor the situation.
Pakistan lies in a seismically active region and frequently experiences earthquakes of varying intensity.
Earlier in December 2025, a separate earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale was felt in Karachi and surrounding areas. That quake, recorded at a depth of 12 kilometres, struck at 12:51am and was felt in areas including SITE, Saddar, Clifton, DHA Phase 8 and PECHS. Residents of Liaquatabad and nearby localities had described the tremors as particularly strong.
