Ghee, cooking oil prices rise in Pakistan

The rise in prices of edible oil and ghee has heavily impacted both consumers and small traders, particularly in the food business.

Small traders, especially those in the food industry, are struggling due to the increasing cost of essential commodities.

In November, the price of cooking oil increased by Rs30, from Rs530 to Rs560, while ghee prices reached Rs550.

The inflationary surge has caused significant concerns among hotel, restaurant, and food cart owners, who say the higher prices of ghee and cooking oil are making it nearly impossible to sustain their businesses.

The rising costs have also led to a drop in sales, as consumers are forced to cut back on spending due to the strain on their finances.

Small traders have reported that their expenses have doubled, while their profit margins have significantly shrunk. The continued price hikes in essential items are putting a financial strain on households as well.

The increase in ghee and cooking oil prices, on top of already rising inflation, has further pushed up the cost of basic necessities, especially food. Aggrieved consumers have expressed frustration, saying the government has failed to provide any relief.

On October 18, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported a 0.28% increase in weekly inflation, as measured by the Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ending on October 17.
