Tonight, Muslims across the world will observe Shab-e-Meraj (Lailat-al-Miraj), one of the most significant nights in Islam, commemorating the miraculous journey of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
On this sacred 27th of Rajab, the Prophet (PBUH) traveled from the Kaaba in Mecca to Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem (Isra) and ascended through the seven heavens (Meraj) on the celestial steed al-Buraq, ultimately reaching Sidratul-Muntaha to meet Allah (SWT).
Shab-e-Meraj occurred in the 10th year of the Prophet’s (PBUH) mission, around 621 CE, approximately 1,405 years ago. Today, Muslims observe it in the Hijri year 1447 AH, continuing the tradition established since the Hijra from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE.
The Journey Through the Seven Heavens:
During this extraordinary night, the Prophet (PBUH) met several prophets along the way:
- 1st Heaven: Hazrat Adam (PBUH)
- 2nd Heaven: Hazrat Isa (Jesus, PBUH) with Hazrat Zakariya (PBUH) and Hazrat Yahya (PBUH)
- 3rd Heaven: Hazrat Yusuf (Joseph, PBUH)
- 4th Heaven: Hazrat Yunus (Jonah, PBUH)
- 5th Heaven: Hazrat Haroon (Aaron, PBUH)
- 6th Heaven: Hazrat Moosa (Moses, PBUH)
- 7th Heaven: Hazrat Ibrahim (Abraham, PBUH)
On his journey, the Prophet (PBUH) witnessed the rivers of Paradise, angelic worship at Bayt al-Ma‘mur, and the celestial glow of Sidratul-Muntaha, culminating in a direct encounter with Allah (SWT). It was on this night that the five daily prayers were ordained as a central pillar of Islam.
Tonight, Muslims will engage in prayers, Qur’an recitation, Zikr (remembrance of Allah), voluntary Nafl Salah, and heartfelt Du‘a and Munajat.
Mosques, streets, and homes are adorned with lights, candles, and colorful decorations, reflecting the sanctity of the night. Many also visit the graves of loved ones, praying for blessings for the departed.
Shab-e-Meraj is not only a commemoration of a miraculous journey, but also a night that reminds Muslims of faith, devotion, and the profound beauty of the heavens, inspiring spiritual reflection and strengthening the bond with Allah.
