Nihal Hashmi takes oath as Governor of Sindh

KARACHI:  Senior Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) leader Nihal Hashmi has taken oath as the new Governor of Sindh.

The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court Zafar Ahmed Rajput at a formal event attended by senior political leaders and government officials.

Among those present at the ceremony were Chief Minister Sindh Murad Ali Shah,  Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, Zia Lanjar and Bashir Memon, along with party leaders, workers and other dignitaries.

The decision to appoint Nihal Hashmi as Governor of Sindh was made a day earlier after President Asif Ali Zardari approved his appointment.

Political Career

Nihal Hashmi, who belongs to Karachi, has remained associated with the Pakistan Muslim League (N) for several decades.

He served as Adviser on Law and Justice to former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif from 1997 to 1999. In 2012, he was appointed president of PML-N Karachi and later became the party’s general secretary in Sindh in August 2014.

In 2015, he was elected to the Senate of Pakistan on a PML-N seat from Punjab.

In 2017, Hashmi was expelled from the party following a controversial statement related to the Panama Papers Case. However, his party membership was restored in 2021.
