ISLAMABAD: Pakistan will facilitate technical-level talks between the United States and Iran in Switzerland on June 21, the Foreign Office said on Saturday.
According to an official statement, the discussions will take place in the Swiss town of Bürgenstock following the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Islamabad, Washington and Tehran aimed at advancing diplomatic engagement.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said representatives from the United States and Iran will participate in the talks, while mediating delegates from Pakistan and Qatar will also attend in a facilitation role.
Pakistan said it will continue to support the process as a mediator to help implement understandings reached under the memorandum and promote further diplomatic progress between the two countries.
The spokesperson added that Islamabad remains committed to promoting peace, stability and the peaceful resolution of conflicts in the region through constructive diplomatic engagement.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to depart for Switzerland amid ongoing preparations for technical-level talks between the United States and Iran, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said.
According to the sources, the schedule for the prime minister’s visit is being finalized ahead of the negotiations, which are set to take place in the Swiss town of Bürgenstock.
Pakistan is expected to participate in the talks in a mediating role alongside Qatar under the framework of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding aimed at advancing diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran.
Meanwhile, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has arrived in Tehran as part of efforts to support the diplomatic process. During his visit, he met Iran’s foreign minister to discuss matters of mutual interest and ongoing developments related to the talks.
On the other hand, Iran will send a delegation to Switzerland for upcoming negotiations, Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said on Saturday, stressing that Tehran expects the other side to honor its commitments.
Baqaei said the Iranian delegation would seek the implementation of promises made by the opposing party and emphasized that Iran remains committed to its own obligations.
“We stand by our commitments and expect the other side to do the same,” he said.
The spokesman also called for international efforts to compel what he described as the “Zionist regime” to halt its attacks on Lebanon.
