At least six people were killed and several others injured after a suicide blast targeted the residence of a peace committee leader during a wedding ceremony in Dera Ismail Khan on Friday night, police said.
The explosion occurred at the home of Aman (Peace) Committee head Noor Alam Mehsud near Qureshi Mor while the marriage event was underway. Initial reports confirmed three deaths, but the toll rose to six by Saturday morning after three injured victims succumbed to their wounds.
Police said seven people, including Noor Alam Mehsud, were injured in the attack. Five of the wounded were shifted to the DHQ Trauma Centre for treatment.
According to law enforcement officials, the blast appears to have been a suicide attack. Witnesses reported that assailants also opened fire following the explosion, adding to the chaos at the venue.
Those killed in the attack have been identified as Waheedullah Mehsud, also known as Jigri, a member of the Peace Committee; Abdul Majeed Lagri, an advocate; and an unidentified 29-year-old man. The identities of the remaining victims are yet to be confirmed.
Police said investigations are underway to determine the exact nature of the attack and identify those responsible. Security in the area has been tightened following the incident.
