Hopes for England to win the second test against West Indies took a major hit as persistent rain washed out the entire third day.

According to media reports, West Indies were supposed to start the day on 32/1, but the rainy weather stopped that from happening.

This means now that England will have two days to take the 19 wickets that would tie the three-match series at 1-1.

Opener Kraigg Brathwaite is on 6, not out and nightwatchman Alzarri Joseph is unbeaten on 14.

With the rain refusing to stop, the umpires on the ground ultimately decided to call stumps at just after 4pm local time.

On a good note, the weather forecast looks a better for the fourth and fifth days.

In order to take victory against the WI, England will now have Sunday and Monday to twice find a way through a West Indies batting line-up that was stubborn in their first-Test win in Southampton.

They face the hurdle of a placid pitch, albeit one that has shown some signs of turn.

They will also almost certainly have to enforce the follow-on, so unfashionable in the modern game.

Earlier, English pacer Jofra Archer hit after he was fined an undisclosed amount and given a written warning for breaching the bio-secure protocols.

Archer visited his home in Hove on Monday during his journey from Southampton to Manchester.

He was dropped for this Test, but the lack of a further ban means he will be available to play in the third if he returns two negative coronavirus tests during a five-day period of isolation which ends on Monday.

The West Indies ended day three on 32/1, that still leaves them trailing by 437 runs, and will continue batting on Sunday at 11:00 local time.
