Rosario Born Striker Lionel Messi fired Argentina to a World Cup qualifying win over Ecuador with a 12th-minute penalty in an enticing match at La Bombonera Stadium in Buenos Aires.

Putting his Barcelona problems behind, the Argentine forward, celebrated after scoring a penalty against Ecuador during Argentina’s 2022 FIFA World Cup South American Qualifier Football match. The six-time Ballon d’Or winner lashed his 71st international goal.

He gave Argentina the early lead after Lucas Ocampos was tackled inside the penalty area and Argentina was awarded a penalty kick.

The iconic Bombonera Stadium that is usually bouncing from the passion of fervent fans was left without spectators due to the novel coronavirus restrictions.

“It was important to start with a win because we know how difficult the qualifiers are and all the matches are going to be as hard as this one,” Messi said.
