City put on a tremendous display, peppering Madrid’s goal for long periods of time, but Carlo Ancelotti’s team continued to rise from the ashes to maintain themselves in contention for a second final.
Kevin de Bruyne set the tone with a diving header from Riyad Mahrez’s cross in the second minute, and Gabriel Jesus quickly added a second from close range as Real reeled under wave after wave of attacks.
Madrid manager Pep Guardiola was enraged when Riyad Mahrez hit the side-netting instead of finding the unmarked Phil Foden, who went inches wide. After 33 minutes, though, Karim Benzema gave Madrid a lifeline by sweeping home Ferland Mendy’s cross.
The Spanish side escaped once again just after the break when Mahrez hit the post, but City reclaimed their two-goal lead in the 53rd minute when Foden headed home Fernandinho’s cross.
City were pushed back once again when Vinicius Junior dummied past Fernandinho and ran from within his own half to score a superb second for Madrid.
Referee Istvan Kovacs, on the other hand, made excellent use of his advantage to allow Bernardo Silva to score City’s fourth goal into the top-left corner.
After Aymeric Laporte’s handball, Benzema completed a superb performance by chipping a Panenka penalty past Ederson with eight minutes remaining.
Liverpool takes on Villarreal of Spain in the other semi-final this year, with the first leg taking place at Anfield on Wednesday.
The final will be held at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday, May 28.
