Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels left Sunday’s game against the Texas Rangers after being hit in the left hand by a pitch in the fifth inning.

Trout brought his hand directly into the path of the pitch as he tried to duck out of the way, which was a bit of a fluke play.

Here’s a link to the video. Trout may have misjudged the pitch (81 mph slider) out of Spencer Patton’s hand and was preparing for a fastball based on the way he moved.

Mike Trout is day-to-day, according to the Angels, after X-rays came back negative. Because the hand has so many little, easily broken bones, it was natural to assume the worst after it happened.

Mike Trout escaped serious harm, as confirmed by additional tests on Monday. He told reporters that he will begin wearing a pad on his hand immediately.

Without a doubt, losing Trout for an extended period of time would be devastating for an Angels team that has only made the playoffs once in Trout’s ten full seasons.

Mike Trout is irreplaceable, and the Angels are a top-heavy team with few viable depth options to replace any regular who goes down with an injury.

Last season, Trout, now 30, was restricted to 36 games due to a lingering calf ailment. After May 17, he didn’t play again.

Mike Trout only played 477 games from 2017 to 21 due to injuries and the epidemic. That’s 67 percent of the 708 possible games.

Before leaving the game on Sunday, Trout went 1-for-2 with a double. On the season, he has a.267/.405/.567 batting line. Anaheim was 5-4 in the early going heading into Sunday’s game.
