At the 2022 PGA Championship, Australia’s Cameron Smith whacked Aaron Wise in the head with a poor tee shot.
During the second round at Southern Hills Country Club in Oklahoma, Wise was walking down the fairway of the seventh hole when he was struck by Smith’s shot from the nearby second tee.
Smith had sliced his drive to the right and could be heard shouting “fore” (a warning given by golfers to surrounding players or fans who might be harmed by a ball) almost immediately.
Unbeknownst to the American, he didn’t hear the warning and was struck in the head without cheval.
Wise was observed sitting on the ground for a short while after the ball struck him, before rising to his feet and clutching a water bottle to his head.
The 25-year-old was able to conclude his second round with pars on the seventh and eighth holes after starting on the 10th hole and finishing with a bogey on the 18th.
After his round, Wise was photographed with an ice pack on his head, where the ball had impacted him. Wise “fell down on a knee for about 30 seconds but seemed to shake it off,” according to Golf Channel’s Ryan Lavner, and “showed his playing companion the mark on his cap.”
Wise, according to sports host Garrett Johnston, claimed “I was down on the fairway with a slight ringing in my ears. This lasted approximately 20 seconds. After that, I felt relatively normal.”
He shot a two-over 72 in the second round to finish one-over for the tournament and comfortably make the cut.
