Paris 2024: Men can now compete in artistic swimming at Paris Olympics

• Artistic swimming has been on the Olympic programme since 1984.
• Paris 2024 will feature as many female athletes as male for the first time in history.

World Aquatics said Thursday that men can compete in artistic swimming at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

IOC permitted male participation in artistic swimming team event, with a limit of two male athletes per team, per World Aquatics.

Since 1984, artistic swimming has been a women-only Olympic event. At Paris 2024, 10 teams will fight for gold at the Olympic Aquatics Centre. Male participants in artistic swimming is another step in the IOC’s effort to provide gender equity at the Games, with Paris 2024 including as many female as male athletes for the first time in history.

Billy May, the first male World Champion in artistic swimming, said it will be a breakthrough moment. May says “Men in Olympic Artistic Swimming was previously an inconceivable dream.”

Paris 2024’s artistic swimming competition will feature 96 swimmers in five disciplines from 5-10 August 2024. Free duets, Technical duets, Finale duets, Free teams, Technical teams.
