Argentinian world champion Geronimo Rulli signed by Ajax

Ajax, Villarreal, and Geronimo Rulli have reached an agreement for the Argentine goalkeeper to join the Dutch club, according to Ajax.

Rulli began his professional career in 2013 with the Argentine team Estudiantes. He then went on to play for Real Sociedad in Spain and Montpellier in France before joining Villarreal in 2020. In 2021, he won the UEFA Europa League with Villarreal.

Rulli was the reserve goalkeeper for Argentina’s World Cup-winning team at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

He must contend with the 39-year-old Remko Pasveer and the 40-year-old Maarten Stekelenburg for a position as the starting goalkeeper at Ajax.

Rulli, a native of the province of Buenos Aires and a graduate of the local Estudiantes youth programme, was elevated to the first team squad in 2012. He served as Justo Villar and Agustin Silva’s backup at first, but on April 8, 2013, he made his professional debut after taking advantage of Villar’s transfer to Nacional and Silva’s injury.
