Cameron Norrie ensured that Great Britain would advance to the group stage by defeating Nicolas Mejia of Colombia in the Davis Cup Finals.

In Bogota, he gave the visitors an unstoppable 3-1 advantage.

The top-ranked British player won his second straight sets encounter on clay at a high altitude by defeating Mejia 6-4 6-4.

As a result, Dan Evans was spared from facing off against Nicolas Barrientos.

Evans and Neal Skupski triumphed in the doubles round earlier on Saturday.

Evans’ surprising initial loss to the 253rd-ranked Mejia was made up for by Norrie’s victory over Barrientos on Friday.

Following that, the British duo defeated former world number ones Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah 6-4 6-4 to turn the tie in Britain’s favour.

“I feel enormous pride for what the boys have accomplished,” said GB captain Leon Smith.

“They went out and fought fiercely. It didn’t have to be top-notch tennis since the conditions didn’t allow for it, but it did require a lot of grit and drive “He went on to say.

Because of the challenge of competing 2,566 metres above sea level and using the unfamiliar pressure-less balls required to manage the high altitude, Captain Smith described the route as being the “most convoluted” his team could have drawn.

But Norrie seized the opportunity to put Great Britain, the 10-time champions, into the 16-team groups round in September with a well-deserving victory at Pueblo Viejo Country Club.
