Hasan Salihamidzic, the sporting director at Bayern Munich, expressed his disappointment in injured captain Manuel Neuer on Sunday, saying that Neuer “placed his personal interests before” the team.

The current exchange of words between the club and its captain comes in response to Neuer’s candid interview with Sueddeutsche Zeitung and The Athletic.

Neuer, who shattered his leg in a skiing accident in December and is presently sidelined, criticized the club for sacking longtime goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic, saying it made him feel “as if my heart had been torn out.”

Salihamidzic told the German tabloid Bild on Sunday: “I understand Manuel is impacted emotionally, but as captain, I would have expected him to act differently.

“Manuel has prioritized his personal interests over the club’s.

“We’ll have a rational internal discussion with him.”

The off-field drama mirrors the German champions’ terrible record on the pitch, as they are yet to win a league match in 2023.

Bayern, who are currently second behind Union Berlin, go to Wolfsburg on Sunday.
