As Gareth Bale retires, Aaron Ramsey feels a new generation of Wales players can make their own success.

Ramsey is the new national captain, after former Real Madrid and Tottenham striker Bale, who retired in January.

Wales’ greatest goal-scorer and most-capped player, Gareth Bale, was not the only senior player to retire from international football following the World Cup in Qatar.

Chris Gunter, Joe Allen, and Jonny Williams also left Wales after a successful career that included a run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.

Ramsey is sure that there are enough young players on the rise in Wales to keep his nation competitive during the Euro 2024 qualifying campaign under new manager Rob Page.

“Gareth, Joe, Jonny, Gunts have been vital for us throughout the years and will forever be a part of Welsh history,” Nice midfielder Ramsey, 32, told reporters on Monday.

“We will be forever grateful for what they provided to this team, this nation, and we’ll miss those players around the place.

“But football is eternally changing and there’ll be opportunities for these younger players to step up and demonstrate what they’re capable of. Maybe, we can now write our own history.”

Wales wants to participate in the European Championship in Germany for the third time in a row in 2019.

On Saturday, they play Croatia in Split, and on March 28, they host Latvia. The Group D lineup is completed by Turkey and Armenia.

The qualifiers come after Qatar’s dismal 2022 World Cup campaign. Page’s team only managed one goal and placed last in their group in their first World Cup campaign since 1958.

“That was sad,” remarked Ramsey, a former Arsenal and Juventus player. “You had a big build-up leading into it, the first time for many years Wales has qualified.

“You want to go there and show what you’re capable of, but we didn’t quite reach the level we’re accustomed to.”

Morgan Fox has taken Ben Davies’ spot in the team after the Tottenham defender was ruled out of the two qualifiers.
