MUNICH: In the second leg of their last-16 match, Bayern Munich easily defeated Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 and ended all of their aspirations of winning the Champions League. With a 3-0 overall victory, Bayern Munich advanced to the quarterfinals.

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting gave Bayern the lead on the evening at the Allianz Arena, carrying a 1-0 lead from the first leg in Paris last month, and substitute Serge Gnabry sealed the triumph one minute from time.

With Neymar out due to an ankle injury, Bayern were deserving winners over a lacklustre PSG team. Neither Kylian Mbappe nor Lionel Messi had the desired effect on the game for PSG.

PSG has exited the Champions League in the round of 16 for the second consecutive season, marking the fifth time in the past seven seasons that the team controlled by Qatar has failed to advance past the preliminary round.

Their defence suffered from injuries, with Nordi Mukiele needing to be replaced at halftime in addition to captain Marquinhos, who had to leave after 36 minutes due to a rib injury.

The French champs might have taken the lead in the first half, but Matthijs de Ligt cleared Vitinha’s shot off the line.

After Marco Verratti was fouled in his own box, Leon Goretzka set up the unmarked Choupo-Moting for an easy goal as Bayern took the lead shortly after the hour mark.

Until Gnabry sealed Bayern’s triumph late on, Sergio Ramos came the closest to bringing the visitors back into the contest.
