Mohamed Salah missed a penalty to end Liverpool’s hopes of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Champions League just a week after breaking the record for Premier League goals scored with 129.

The Reds lost shockingly 1-0 to struggling Bournemouth due to the Egyptian’s error after smashing seven goals past Manchester United in their previous game.

Former Liverpool star Sadio Mane made his first Bundesliga start for Bayern Munich after a lengthy injury layoff and set up two goals in a 5-3 win against Augsburg.

African athletes making headlines in the top European leagues are highlighted below by AFP Sport:

ENGLAND

MOHAMED SALAH (Liverpool)

As Adam Smith used his arm to stop Diogo Jota’s header in the second half, Jurgen Klopp’s team was down a goal to Philip Billing’s early strike. Salah, a two-time African Footballer of the Year, sadly missed his penalty.

SAID BENRAHMA (West Ham)

In 1-1 draw with Aston Villa, the Algerian winger’s penalty equalizer helped West Ham escape the drop.
Ollie Watkins’ goal gave the Hammers the lead in the first half, but Benrahma equalized in the 26th minute following Leon Bailey foul on Lucas Paqueta.

PATSON DAKA (Leicester)

The Zambian scored for the first time since October, but it was insufficient to prevent his struggling team from losing to Chelsea 3-1 at home.

Daka scored Leicester’s equalizer in the 39th minute with 20-yard low shot into the bottom corner.

SPAIN

PATHE CISS (Rayo Vallecano)

Senegalese Pathe Ciss, a midfielder for Vallecano who had the unfortunate luck to give up an own goal in a 3-0 defeat against Celta Vigo, was the only African to score in La Liga throughout the course of the weekend. Before a VAR review was able to affirm the second goal of the game, Ciss had to wait a while.

ITALY

M´BALA NZOLA (Spezia)

Nzola, an Angolan attacker, was essential to Spezia’s 2-1 victory over Inter Milan and their major victory in the Serie A survival fight. With some great hold-up play, he set up Daniel Maldini to score the game’s opening goal. He then converted the game’s winning penalty to move Spezia five points clear of the drop zone. This year, Nzola has scored 12 league goals.

GERMANY

SADIO MANE (Bayern Munich)

The Senegal star had goal ruled offside in addition to two assists.

The most of any player in the top five European leagues, he has had six league goals disallowed for offside this season.

FRANCE

JEAN-EUDES AHOLOU (Strasbourg)

Strasbourg secured 2-2 Ligue draw at Marseille in the final three minutes thanks to brace from the Ivorian midfielder.
Aholou stunned the Velodrome with tremendous 20-meter drive that cannoned in via the crossbar and lifted Strasbourg out of the drop zone after sending bouncing effort over Pau Lopez’s head from corner.

MOSTAFA MOHAMED (Nantes)

The 2-2 tie between Nantes and Nice was salvaged by the Egypt international’s late equalizer for Nantes.
Mohamed scored his sixth goal of the year off cross from Joao Victor to help Nantes end three-game losing streak.
